What is a Pinterest Board?

A Pinterest board is a place where you can collect ideas and inspiration for a specific topic.

Pinterest boards are created to organize your interests and ideas into different categories so you can find them more easily.

Think of them almost like categories on a website – they can be used to easily navigate through the content of a Pinterest page, and should be structured in a logical way.

Most importantly, Pinterest boards are one of the most important aspects of your account optimization, so choosing how many you create, with what names, and in what categories is super important.

Why?

Because things like the names of your boards, and what content you pin to what board are part of the Pinterest algorithm.

It has a direct influence on how well Pinterest can understand your content.

If you make it really easy for the algorithm to understand your content, Pinterest is more likely to show it to a broader audience and increase your reach.

I won’t go into details here, but you can find out everything you need to know about success on Pinterest in my mini course below!

How to Create a Pinterest Board: Step by Step Tutorial

There are two ways you can create a Pinterest board.

Creating A Board from Profile Page

  1. Click the plus sign on your main Pinterest page
  2. Give your new board a name
  3. Decide whether you want to create it as secret (recommended!)
  4. Save changes
  5. Add suggested pins to your board
  6. Go back to the board and add board description

You also have an option to invite collaborators to the board, from the list presented, which will essentially make this board a group board (more on that later).

Creating a Pinterest Board from Pin Button

The second way to create a board is by finding a pin image you want to save, clicking on the pin it button, and then instead of choosing an existing board to save it to, you click on create board option at the bottom of the screen.

Then, the process is the same as that of the first option.

How to Name a Pinterest Board?

You should avoid giving your boards cute or funny names, especially if you have a business account and want to use the account to drive traffic to your website.

The name of your Pinterest board should be based on your keyword research, and should match the niche you’re in!

In terms of length of the name, don’t choose keywords or names that are too long, because your audience can’t read them.

Two or three words are an ideal length for a board name.

What is a Secret Pinterest Board?

A secret Pinterest board is a board that is not visible on your Pinterest account, but you can still add pins to it.

I like to create my own boards as secret first, so I can optimize them and add a lot of content to them before publishing them.

This has a great advantage: it’s less spammy and a safer way to add a lot of content to the board.

Lets presume you want to add 20 repins to your new board. If you do that on a ‘public’ board, your followers will see a stream of 20 pins in their homefeed.

If you add 20 repins or pins to a secret board, you won’t spam the feed of your followers, and it’s also less likely to trigger the Pinterest spam filter.

How Many Pinterest Boards Do You Need?

Deciding on the number of boards you will create comes down to a few different factors:

  • how many main keywords / categories of content do you have?
  • how much content do you have for each category?
  • how many main keywords and interests have you researched for your niche?
  • how much content are you currently pinning?

If you’re just starting out, you shouldn’t create too many boards in a short period of time, as this will trigger the spam filter on Pinterest.

For new accounts, start with 5 main boards that cover the most important topics on your website.

You should avoid creating a new board, unless you have matching published content that you can add to the board.

Let’s say you have a board about Healthy Soup Recipes – I would not create the board until I have about 5 – 10 different recipes on my blog that I can pin there.

Your boards should be an active, living and breathing part of your account, and pinning to each one regularly is important.

How Can I Create a Group Board?

You can easily create a group board by inviting collaborators to a new board or existing board.

Pinterest gives you a list of people who follow you, and if you tick the box next to their name, they will get an invite to collaborate with you on the content of the board.

I recommend only creating group boards in a couple of broader categories of your profile, as they are more likely to stay active, and also on topic.

What Should I Add to my Pinterest Board?

The best way to optimize your Pinterest board is by adding top performing content for your chosen keyword – or board name.

This will help the algorithm to understand the content of the board much faster.

This way you are also increasing the chances of your own content ranking much faster.

How do you know what are top ranking pins for your board?

Simply use the board name – your keyword – in the search bar, and see the top pins that come up – save them to your board.

Alternatively, when you’re creating a board from scratch, Pinterest will suggest related pins in the same window, and you can use those as your first pins for the board.

Fresh Pins vs Repins in a Pinterest Board

Pinterest algorithm currently prefers fresh pins – that means new content.

But if you’re creating a new board, you won’t necessarily have a lot of content to share there very quickly, and you shouldn’t.

When creating a new board, it’s perfectly fine to add repins from other accounts, as long as they are top-ranking and match your keyword.

What Happens if You Archive a Pinterest Board?

Archiving a board is a great option if you have some boards that do not fit within your niche, or are not performing well on your account.

When you archive an existing board from which you’re getting traffic, you don’t need to worry – you will still receive traffic from that board, it just won’t be visible on your account.

Archived vs Deleted Pinterest Board

That brings me to another point – what is the difference between archiving and deleting a Pinterest board and which option should you use?

Archived Boards – these are boards that are still visible to you on your account, but your followers or other people can’t see them. You should use the option to archive a board if that board gets some traffic and you don’t want to lose it.

Deleted Boards – these should be all boards that are not within your niche, boards created by mistake or boards that only have one or two pins and you won’t be using them. Always check if you get any outbound clicks before deleting a board.

Best Practice for Pinterest Boards

We covered a lot of ground here, and in addition to the points I raised above, here are some things you should keep in mind:

  • only use keywords as your board names, not cute names or signs
  • always add board description based on your keyword research
  • do not stuff keywords in your board description, make the text natural but optimized with keywords
  • do not just dozens of group boards, only have a few that are related to your niche
  • review individual analytics for your boards on a monthly basis to identify those that do not perform well
  • you can spy on competitors boards using tools like Pin Inspector
