How do you increase traffic on Pinterest?
That’s simple – you need more people to discover your content in homefeed and in Pinterest search.
Easier said than done, right?
In this article, I wanted to share three simple ways you can increase your traffic on Pinterest, as simple hacks you can implement today!
How to Increase Your Traffic on Pinterest
Homefeed vs search results – what’s a better source of traffic?
Homefeed is where Pinterest displays content based on your interests, and that’s content from the people you follow, and content that the algorithm thinks you will like.
In search feed, on the other hand, you’re getting exactly what you’re looking for, and people are more likely to click on the pin if it matches their intent.
SEO optimization on Pinterest is key to getting your content show up on both places.
In addition to these, Pinterest also shows content under ‘related pins‘ section when you click on any pin in the results. These results are based on Pixie, which is a recommendation system Pinterest algorithm uses to come up with related and highly relevant recommendations.
Here is what the systems look like – one is for search recommendations and the other for related pins.

Now let’s look at how to use what I know about Pinterest algorithm to help you scale your traffic on Pinterest.
No 1 – Getting Your Content Discovered
The first step is getting your content discovered, and here are the simple changes you can make today:
- research keywords related to your niche using Pinterest search bar
- map them out by content clusters, to cover all categories of your website
- schedule your SEO optimized content a few months in advance, keeping a consistent posting schedule
- don’t just optimize the title and description of your pin – optimize all your boards and profile too
- pin your content to 3 – 5 most relevant SEO optimized boards
- check top ranking pins for your most competitive keywords and create content similar to them
- research interests related to your niche and optimize your content for interests too (I cover this in the free mini course linked below)
No 2 – Getting Their Attention
Once you get your content is ranking (you will see this reflected in increased impressions), it will be competing for attention with other top performing pins.
Luckily for us, Pinterest currently likes fresh new content, so it will give you a bit of an advantage.
Here is what you should do to get attention of your audience in the crowded Pinterest feed:
- use bright warm colors in your designs – these are proven to get more engagement and clicks
- make fonts in your overlay big and bold, easy to read on mobile
- use contrasting colors and bold images
- make a claim or statement that will give people reason to click on the pin
- use the right format for pin image sizes – and please, no landscape format pins!
- test a variety of different text options, graphics and colors for each article you create
No 3 – Getting Clicks (Traffic)
Now that you can capture attention of your audience in the search results, it’s time to make sure that they also click on your pin and visit your website, as that’s the whole point, right?
Here are a few ways you can increase outbound clicks from your pins:
- add a specific call to action on your pin design or in the pin description, something like ‘find out more on my website’
- give them a teaser and let them find the answers in the article
- do not give away everything in the pin description, they need a reason to visit your website
