Bloggers: I think bloggers will benefit the most from using Pin Inspector!

It is a must-have tool for planning your content schedule for Pinterest and making sure your content is SEO optimized to rank faster. It shaves off hours from your workload and automates much of the lengthy work needed for Pinterest marketing – see my workflow below for more details.

Who Shouldn’t Use Pin Inspector?

If you have an e-commerce store or a brand that does not have a blog or are not planning to start one soon, then you don’t need Pin Inspector.

To succeed on Pinterest, you really need to publish blog content regularly. Adding your product feed to Pinterest will not do a whole lot for your visibility, so you really need to get into creating content around your brand.

The same applies to influencers without website presence – while your content might work great on Instagram or Tiktok, that doesn’t automatically translate to success on Pinterest.

If you run a successful youtube channel and would like to promote your content on Pinterest, the same applies – it’s not enough to connect your channel and post videos. Unless you plan to convert some of your video content into blog posts, Pin Inspector will be of no use to you.

The last scenario, where I don’t think it’s worth investing in pin inspector, is if you are in a small niche and don’t plan to expand your content.

For example, if you only run one website on Halloween food ideas, you don’t really need pin inspector to research your keywords or competitors, because you only need very little data to look at, and you don’t need to install a dedicated tool just for that.

What is Pin Inspector?

Before I dive into the features, I wanted to explain what Pin Inspector is, as there is a lot of confusion about it.

Pin Inspector is a standalone software that extracts data directly from the backend of Pinterest and works with their API, which means the data is shared directly from Pinterest and in real-time.

That is an important distinction and gives you the confidence that the data you see is accurate.

The tool is a software that you install on your computer, so it’s not web based, which is great. It has a one-time payment and no monthly fees.

The tool was developed by Dave Guindon – I’m a big fan of his work and also use his insights analyzer tool to help me craft unique content for organic search.

Pin Inspector Workflow For My Pinterest Management Agency

Pin Inspector is the only external tool I use in my Pinterest management agency, and it has enabled me to speed up my workflow and get better results for my clients.

Here is my workflow for new clients:

  • research keywords and interests for all topic clusters
  • research competitor accounts and their keywords
  • research top performing pins for the main keywords
  • identify best performing boards for top keywords
  • check ranking colors and low hanging fruit opportunities to rank content faster
  • research new easy to rank content opportunities for the client

All of these things took days of manual research, going through results in Pinterest and manually copying them into my client files.

With Pin Inspector, I can get two days of work done in just a couple of hours!

Pin Inspector Review: Features Step by Step

1. Keyword Research with Pin Inspector

Keyword research is by far the most helpful tool in Pin Inspector – it scrapes all the main keywords, and also keyword variations for you in a matter of seconds.

Not only that, but it will also provide data on the rank of the keyword (I will explain below) and things like the number of words and word count, which is super helpful for finding long tail keywords.

The data is then presented in easy to filter table, which you can also extract into a google sheet.

I use this feature the most, because I always try to find keywords ranking at position 1 or 2 for each content cluster, and having access to this tool makes the whole process much more efficient.

If you’re wondering what the ‘ranks’ mean, it is basically the order in which the keywords are displayed in the suggestions below the search bar.

So if Pin Inspector is telling you that the keyword has a rank of 2, that means that it is displayed as the second one in the list of related keywords under the search bar.

Here is an example:

If you search for Pinterest Marketing, here are the top suggestions that come up in the search bar – just ignore the profiles that show up.

The top ranking keywords for our main keyword are:

  • Pinterest marketing strategy (rank 2)
  • Pinterest marketing business (rank 3)
  • Pinterest marketing tips (rank 4)

I counted the main keyword we used as the one ranking no 1 as its also shown like that in the list.

Why is this important?

Because the order in which the keywords are displayed indicates search volume and interest – the higher the rank, the more search volume it has.

Now let’s have a look at how this is replicated in Pin Inspector.

You can see the same data in the table with filters, which you can easily use to sort the keywords by their rank.

2. Competitor Research with Pin Inspector

Using Pin Inspector, you can quickly identify competitors that rank well in your niche, simply by entering your main keyword in the profiles tab.

You can then click on individual profiles and analyze their top performing pins or boards to see what’s already working well for them.

How cool is that?

You can sort the list of the profiles by the number of followers, to see which ones of your competitors have more established presence on the platform.

In the profile tab, you can see a lot of valuable data points like:

  • how many pins are on the account
  • how many group boards are on the account
  • the reach of the account
  • last active pinning on the account
  • number of interests associated with the account
  • check the competitor’s website directly from pin inspector

3. Content Research with Pin Inspector

This is something a lot of marketers do not use, and I think it’s a huge mistake – Pin Inspector is a goldmine for identifying easy-to-rank topics on Pinterest.

Let me show you how!

First, you want to add your main keyword to the keyword search bar, and filter the results by the number of words.

I like to use three or more words – see below.

Next, you want to click on the rank tab to sort the results by the rank, which will give us keywords with more search volume.

Now, it is a matter of going through the list of keywords to identify some easy-to-rank opportunities.

You can right click on each keyword in the list, and choose the option ‘send to pin search tool’.

This will open up the keyword in the pin search tab and show you top ranking pins for that keyword.

The list is always in the same order, and the pins rank organically in the search results.

I also spotted my own pin ranking there in the top ten.

And here is a screenshot of the organic results, which match the order in Pin Inspector (in my case you see a bit different organic results as I’m not based in the US, so there is a little difference).

From looking at the list in Pin Inspector, you want to identify content that is old, like 1 – 2 years old pinned date, not well optimized and ideally also with bad graphic design.

Just the fact that only outdated content ranks for your keyword is a really good indication that you can rank for it fast, because Pinterest prefers fresh new content.

If you see anything like in the above case, where the pin has a year in the title or graphic, this is pretty easy to outrank.

You can also use the list to rank content by amount of saves, which will give you a good idea which content gets the most engagement. You can use that as a guide for creating your own!

Using this method, I was able to rank my content in less than a month for a competitive long tail keyword:

4. Identify Top Boards

Another useful feature in Pin Inspector is the board tab, which allows you to identify boards that rank the best for the search term.

It is super important to keep an eye on this because you often find Pinterest boards ranking also in organic search results on Google, so this will give your account so much more exposure if you do it right!

I like to use this when I plan boards for a new client – I am mainly interested in how many other boards already exist with the same keyword, how well are they optimized, and how much content they have.

Pin Inspector was the first tool that allowed you to scrape data from Pinterest and do it also in a super user-friendly way.
