Pinterest Marketing Strategy for Bloggers: 3 Keys to Success
The secret to success on Pinterest is really no secret at all, it comes down to just three simple things.
Success on Pinterest = Consistency + Time + Evidence-Based Strategy
I didn’t say it’s easy, but it is simple!
If you miss one part of the equation, the whole thing will fall apart.
Let’s look at each one by one.
1. Effective Evidence-Based Strategy
What do I mean by evidence-based strategy?
It’s a blogging strategy based on facts about the Pinterest algorithm, not a personal opinion of a youtube creator looking to make money from another affiliate scheme.
Here are some facts about the Pinterest Algorithm:
- it’s not enough just to stuff keywords into your pin description and hope for the best
- you also need to optimize for’ interests’ to give yourself the best chance to compete for the top-ranking spots for your keywords.
- the algorithm detects keywords in six different places, make sure you optimize them all (more details see point 1 in this article)
- the algorithm understands your content from the connections between your board and pin, so make sure you pin to only relevant boards
- fresh pins over repins – the algorithm prioritizes new content over repins
- saves are the most important engagement signal you should monitor on your analytics
And how do I know all these things?
It’s not a wild guess.
Pinterest documents the technical aspects of the algorithm, and the different systems they use to classify and rank their content on their Engineering blog pages (which are super fun to read!).
The points above are just some golden nuggets you would find if you read them all.
Instead of making this article a novel, you can learn everything about what the algorithm wants in 2024 in a free mini course I created, where I also link the Engineering blogs if you want to read them yourself.
You can sign up for it using the form below.
2. Consistency
Why is consistency important?
There are two areas where you need to remain consistent: posting and your strategy.
Just like with Google, if you stop creating content, it raises some red flags.
Being consistent on Pinterest means having a posting strategy where you’re sharing new pins on a daily basis – something that Pinterest itself encourages in their ‘beginner’s guide’.
You might ask yourself – but where do I get so much content to post on a daily basis?
Especially if you don’t have enough photos, coming up with new pins can be tricky.
In my previous article, I stressed the point that Pinterest really likes fresh pins, so when you’re adding content you need to make sure to make the pins new and unique.
How can you do that without going crazy?
By using your existing content and making it look ‘fresh’ on Pinterest.
Fresh Pins = new image + new title + new description
So if you have an image that’s already doing well, you can make fresh pins for it by creating new titles and descriptions for it.
Which is a lot of work, if you have to write it all from scratch, multiple times.
Luckily, that’s where AI comes handy!
I created two AI tools with ChatGPT that will craft SEO optimized pin titles and descriptions, and also descriptions for your Pinterest board.
These free tools are included in lesson 5 of my mini course I mentioned above.
Keep in mind the tool is only as good as your keywords, so if you don’t research the correct keywords for your pins, the tools will only speed up writing and won’t help you much further.
Consistency is not tied just to adding content on a daily basis, but also being consistent with the strategy that you use.
If you test one approach this month, and change your strategy next month, the chances are you will do more harm than good.
So make sure you stick to the strategy outlined here, and in my mini course, and follow it religiously.
3. Time (and Patience)
And all of the above will be a waste of time, if you don’t continue doing this long enough.
Just think about it like this:
Pinterest can only show your content to your audience if it can understand your content.
If there are only 100 pins on your account, you will make their job much harder and it will take much longer to see any traction on the account.
On the other hand, if you have 1000 pins on your account, they are all around the same topic, you save them to boards that are related to that topic, and continue adding content, the algorithm will pick up on these connections much faster and get your content in front of the right audience right away.
Does it make sense?
That’s why having enough time means having enough data, which is super crucial for any algorithm.
Any questions?
