Pinterest Marketing Tips for Bloggers: 3 Ways To Increase Your Blog Traffic FAST

Updated:

I have read so much BS over the years about scaling or growing blog traffic with Pinterest.

From the latest hacks based on some experiments to guaranteed ways to get viral on Pinterest and curious ways people stuff affiliate links into their accounts, I’ve seen it all.

Here is the truth nobody really wants to tell you: getting traffic from Pinterest is simple, but not easy.

You need to understand how the platform works, and how people discover the content on the platform.

That should be the foundation of any Pinterest marketing strategy for bloggers.

I will explain everything you need to know in this article.

How to Increase Your Traffic on Pinterest

Are are two key components to increasing your traffic on Pinterest:

First, you need to get your content discovered by your audience on the platform. That means it needs to be optimized for search and interests, so that the algorithm can show it to the correct audience.

You can monitor your progress with your account optimization by checking your analytics for impressions (but make sure its only impressions on your own pins, and not third party pins).

Second, once you get your content served in the homefeed, in recommendations and in search results, you need to make sure your content stands out and gets people to click on it.

That’s it, just two things you need to master!

I will now share the best practice recommendations for both of these, based on how the Pinterest algorithm works in 2024.

1. Getting Your Content Discovered

How do you make sure that people can find your content?

By optimizing your profile, your boards and your pins for not just the right keywords, but also interests.

Interests are a categorization system that the algorithm uses to understand and segment different content, so it can assign it to the correct audience much faster.

Keywords that are extracted from six different places can then help the algorithm to narrow down the exact nature of the content, and the intended audience.

Here are some basic tips that will help you master the first stage:

  • research keywords related to your niche using Pinterest search bar (not in ads section or trends)
  • map them out by content clusters, to cover all categories of your website
  • schedule your SEO optimized content a few months in advance, keeping a consistent posting schedule
  • don’t just optimize the title and description of your pin – optimize all your boards and profile too
  • pin your content to 3 – 5 most relevant SEO optimized boards
  • check top ranking pins for your most competitive keywords and create content similar to them
  • research interests related to your niche and optimize your content for interests too

I cover these concepts and tips in more detail in my free mini course which I linked at the end of the article.

2. Getting Your Content Noticed

Once you get your content ranking in the search feed, you will be competing for the top spots with other content.

Here, you get an easy competitive advantage – if your content has more persuasive text in the headline or the overlay text, nicer graphics, or photos, you’re more likely to get more clicks and saves.

Saves are the most important engagement signal, so always make sure you ask people to save your content. If they don’t click on it to visit your website now, they will get back to it later.

Here is what you should do to get the attention of your audience in the crowded Pinterest feed:

  • use bright warm colors in your designs – these are proven to get more engagement and clicks
  • make fonts in your overlay big and bold, easy to read on mobile
  • use contrasting colors and bold images
  • make a claim or statement that will give people reason to click on the pin
  • use the right format for pin image sizes – and please, no landscape format pins!
  • test a variety of different text options, graphics and colors for each article you create

Here are a few ways you can increase outbound clicks from your pins:

  • add a specific call to action on your pin design or in the pin description, something like ‘find out more on my website’
  • give them a teaser and let them find the answers in the article
  • do not give away everything in the pin description, they need a reason to visit your website

How To Monitor Your Progress

Pinterest Analytics is the best way to monitor the progress of your marketing strategy.

At first, you want to keep an eye on your impressions and saves – these are the most important metrics for the growth of the account.

If your impressions increase, that means that your content is well-optimized and that the Pinterest algorithm understands what interest is associated with it.

Impressions will not help you, though, if your content doesn’t get enough saves, which is the most important engagement metric.

A low engagement rate on content with high impressions is a really bad thing – it’s a signal that people see your content but don’t find it interesting.

Once you see a nice growth on the account, it is time to pay close attention to your outbound clicks.

You want to identify the type of content that people most click on, see some patterns, and then create more of that content to share on the platform.
