Key to Success on Pinterest
To fully understand how to succeed on Pinterest, you need to understand how the algorithm works.
Why?
Pinterest is a visual search engine powered by an algorithm.
The algorithm needs to scan through billions of pins to find the correct content to show to the relevant audience.
They do that quickly and efficiently using multiple machine learning models and systems that form part of the core Pinterest algorithm.
And how do I know that?
Unlike Google, Pinterest documents how the algorithm works in very technical engineering articles, where they explain the different systems and how they interact with each other.
So, what can you learn about the algorithm, and how can you use it in your strategy?
I will share more in the cheat sheet you will find below.
Cheat Sheet With My Best Pinterest Marketing Tips
Here is the cheat sheet which you can save to your Pinterest profile, with more details listed below.
This cheat sheet is designed to be a guide for beginners, but you can also use it if you want to audit your existing account and make improvements.

1. Keyword Research: The Right Way
Only use the Pinterest search bar to research keywords for your profile, no need for any tools or looking into paid ads keywords or trends.
For each category you have on your website or blog, as well as your main niche, you should have a list of the most relevant keywords for that topic cluster.
For example: if you have a travel blog about UK travel destinations, you should research keywords for:
- UK travel (main niche)
- London travel (category)
- Cambridge travel (category)
- Oxford travel (category) and so on…
How do you know which keywords to use?
The keyword suggestions you will see at the top of the list, closer to the search bar, will have more searches and that’s why they are suggested earlier.
The ones further down the list are not searched as often, and tend to be less competitive and more suitable as topic ideas.
Create a complete keyword plan and strategy before you start adding any content.
2. Using Keywords Correctly
Now that you mapped out keywords for each of your categories, but also the main keywords for your blog, it’s time to put them to good use.
You shouldn’t just stuff keywords into your pin titles and descriptions.
Shorter and broader keywords, like London Travel Tips (in our example) make great board titles, as long as you have enough content to save there.
Longer keywords, with 3 or more words, like Summer in London travel, would make great pin titles and can be used in pin descriptions.
Most importantly, you should avoid just stuffing keywords into your pin descriptions and instead create brand new description and headline (at least!) for each pin you create.
There are ways to make this process much faster and more efficient using AI – I share my own free tools I use for this in the free Pinterest course linked below.
Your Pinterest profile name and description should also contain the main niche keywords for your site.
3. Pinning the Right Content
There are a few different types of content you can be adding to Pinterest:
- idea pins
- video pins
- static pins
- carousel pins
- fresh pins vs repins
All you need to remember is that in 2024, the algorithm favours fresh pins – which means new pins that have not been seen before.
Pinterest identifies a fresh pin as a pin that has a new image + new title + new description.
Even if you don’t have many images on your site, you can create new fresh pins by optimizing your image with an overlay text, adding a new title and description.
As I mentioned earlier, you can use AI to make this much faster. Check my course below to get access to these.
You should avoid doing a large amount of repins, it will hurt the distribution of your content on the platform.
4. Tracking The Right Data
Last but not least, it’s important to know what to track so you know whether you’re making progress or not.
To get traffic from Pinterest, you first need to discover your content on the platform, so impressions are the metrics you should be keeping an eye on.
Remember that the impressions on your account are reported both for your own pins, and also third party pins, so use the filters in analytics to only monitor impressions on your own content.
But a high amount of impressions and low engagement is actually bad for your account because it’s a sign that the audience doesn’t enjoy the content.
So in addition to impressions, you should also track which content gets the highest amount of saves – which is the most important engagement metric on Pinterest.
If your content gets a lot of saves, it indicates to the algorithm that the content is popular with the audience, and it will serve it to more people.
Hope that all makes sense!
