Pinterest Marketing Ideas: 3 Tips For Boosting Your Reach With the New Algorithm

Updated:

Pinterest marketing ideas evolve over time, so before you start implementing any new hacks or tips, make sure you’re following ideas based on how the algorithm works in 2025 and beyond.

And that’s exactly what we’re going to do here.

I started using Pinterest 10 years ago, and it was a very different world to what you see today.

It was much easier to achieve massive growth on the platform as there was little competition, and Pinterest actively encouraged content creators to share their best content and tips.

Over time, I managed to grow my oldest site to over 500,000 sessions per month and continue achieving fantastic results for clients as a Pinterest manager.

In this article, I will share three simple tips for boosting the reach of your Pinterest account, based on what the algorithm currently prefers!

Pinterest Marketing Ideas for Boosting Your Reach

To fully understand how you succeed on Pinterest, and how to create an effective marketing strategy, you need to understand how the algorithm works.

Pinterest is a visual search engine, and it needs to scan through billions of pins to find the right ones to show to the audience.

They do that quickly and efficiently using multiple machine learning models and systems that form part of the core Pinterest algorithm.

And how do I know that?

Unlike Google, Pinterest documents how the algorithm works in very technical engineering articles. Don’t worry, you don’t need a computer science degree to read through them, I’ve done it already.

Based on the data available about the algorithm, here are three simple ways to boost your account’s reach.

Tip 1 – Board Name Should Be Your Keyword

Your board names are one of the fastest ways to boost the visibility of your account.

I’ve seen so many accounts with cute and quirky titles as their board names.

While they are fun to read, I do not recommend doing this on your account. It is the number one thing you should avoid.

Also, do not use any symbols – they are just not necessary and make your account look spammy.

Pinterest board name should be your keyword, that’s it.

Simple as that.

Why?

Because board names, board descriptions and the pins inside the board are actually part of the Pinterest algorithm.

The algorithm detects and extracts keywords from six different places, and one of them happens to be the board name (see below).

It’s the basic building block of your account, and you should be very careful about what you name your boards and how many of them you create.

Do your keyword research properly before you create any new board, and make a board strategy that you can follow.

Where do you find your keywords?

In the Pinterest search bar!

I won’t go into details about keyword research here, but you can find out everything you need to know and much more in the free mini course I created.

Tip 2 – Limit the Amount of Repins

Pinterest algorithm gives more preferential treatment to accounts that share mostly fresh pins, instead of repins.

Why?

Just think about it!

The platform is a discovery search engine for NEW ideas. If creators only repin existing content, there will not be enough new ideas or content to discover!

If you have a personal account, it is perfectly fine to spend your time saving and repinning content, but you should not do that on your business account.

So, what is a fresh pin, and how do you create only fresh pins?

Fresh pin = new image + new title + new description

If you tweak one or two of these elements, Pinterest will classify it as a fresh pin.

In our case, we can just the same image, and just update the title and description for each pin, making it optimized for a selection of different keywords.

This will give your content the best chance to be seen and have the highest reach.

If you need help creating a lot of fresh pins with new titles and descriptions, I have created a free AI tool that can help you do that in a matter of minutes.

Sing up to my free mini course I shared earlier, and I share links to these tools in the final lesson number five.

Tip 3 – Focus on Saves, Not Clicks

Saves are the strongest engagement metric on Pinterest because it indicates that the content resonates with the audience and they want to save it for later.

So instead of obsessing about clicks or outbound clicks, you should first focus on increasing the amount of saves your account gets, as that will boost the engagement rate on your account as a whole.

If the algorithm detects that your account gets a high amount of shares – in relation to impressions – it will reward your account with higher content distribution.

Simple, right? But not easy!

So how do you increase the amount of saves your content gets?

Here are a few tips to get you started, and you can find more in my free course.

  • ask your audience to save the pin in your pin description
  • check your analytics for content with the most saves and optimize your content strategy based on it – create more of what’s already working
  • check what type of content in your niche gets the most saves using Pin Inspector, and use the info as part of your own strategy to create new content or optimize existing content
