No time to read now? No worries! Save these pins to your Pinterest board so that you can easily get back to it later.

What are Pinterest Impressions
Pinterest defines impressions as ‘The number of times your Pins or ads were on screen.’ (source)
If you dive deeper, you find this definition of what counts as an impression:
”Pinterest counts an impression if at least one pixel of the Pin container appears on screen for at least one continuous second…’ (source)
As you can see, the bar is set pretty low, and no actual human has to see the content.
All it needs is a tiny single pixel loaded for at least one second.
That begs the question: do impressions really matter?
Yes they do, for two cases:
First, they are a good indication of whether your Pinterest SEO efforts work or if you need to adjust your strategy.
Secondly, a significant drop in impressions may indicate that you triggered a spam filter on Pinterest and you need to take steps to recover your account.
I will get into the details of both of these cases at the end of the article.
With that in mind, let’s take a look at some examples of how different accounts may perform in terms of impressions.
What is a Good Number of Impressions on Pinterest
There is no magic number to what is considered a good number of impressions on Pinterest.
What’s ‘good amount of impressions’ varies depending on the niche of your account, how old the account is, and how well-optimized it is.
In this article, you will find screenshots of 3 different Pinterest accounts that fall into three different categories – brand new account, established account, and mature account.
This will give you a general idea about what sort of numbers you can expect to see and a bit of a comparison point.
At the end of the article, you will find some tips on how to work with impressions and what to do if they either don’t pick up or you experience a dip in impressions.
1. What is a Good Number of Impressions on Pinterest on a New Account?
If you have a brand new Pinterest account, impressions anywhere between 1.000 to 10.000 are a pretty good start.
That’s a rough estimate based on my experience working with different accounts over the years.
Anywhere beyond 10.000 impressions during your first few months could indicate you have uncovered an under-served topic on Pinterest and you can scale your Pinterest marketing efforts much faster.
By under-served topic I mean keywords or search terms that do not deliver a good match (correct) results in the search results.
For example, users will search for ‘honeymoon in Thailand’ but Pinterest does not have any content that matches this keyword and will show vaguely related pins about traveling to Thailand.
PRO TIP: The number of impressions for a new account is also heavily influenced by the number of group boards you have on your account. If you’re just starting out, don’t add too many to artificially boost your impressions. Focus on one or two that are relevant to your niche and where you can add content regularly.
It’s much more important to focus on engagement metrics especially on new accounts, rather than on impressions.

2. What is a Good Number of Impressions on Pinterest on an Established Account?
For the purpose of this article, let’s presume an established account is between one and three years old.
On an established account, you shouldn’t see any big spikes in impressions and the curve in the analytics will look a lot more stable.
You will see seasonal and weekend spikes, but they are nowhere near as dramatic as in a brand-new account (as shared above).
If you have an older account, optimized it and pin consistently, you will probably be in the range of 500k to 1.5 million impressions.
That, again, totally depends on your niche.
Getting to these numbers in a travel niche is much harder than it is in Pinterest’s preferred niches, such as food, DIY, or home decor.
The example below is from a travel site.

3. What is a Good Number of Impressions on Pinterest on an Aged Pinterest Account?
Below is a screenshot from the oldest account in my portfolio, nearly 10 years old site.
As you can see, it’s getting 112 million impressions, and close to Christmas, it hit the record-breaking 133 million impressions. I have shared the most recent screenshot below.
For a lifestyle site that covers a number of topics, it is much easier to achieve this kind of growth on Pinterest as you have more options to serve a variety of content pinners already love.
On the other hand, it’s much more competitive and your Pinterest SEO game has to be spot on.

Should You Worry About Pinterest Impressions?
In my opinion, impressions are a very problematic metric on Pinterest, and here are four reasons:
First, they are the most overused and abused metric used by Pinterest gurus to sell overpriced courses.
Most people do not pay attention to the details in the screenshot and don’t notice that the guru is NOT referring to traffic, but only impressions.
As I already mentioned, inflating impressions is pretty easy – all you have to do is join many group boards and they will skyrocket overnight. It looks very legit when you’re trying to sell a course to someone who doesn’t know much about how Pinterest works.
Secondly, as the definition states, they are not equal to a human seeing your content.
That’s because of the unique interface of the platform where multiple pins are loaded at the same time, especially on a desktop.
Third: Impressions have a good place and purpose in advertising, helping advertisers to calculate standard metrics for their campaign KPI numbers.
Impressions are directly connected to CMP (cost per thousand impressions) and click-through rate (CTR).
Pinterest has to include this metric to be able to offer its advertising platform, so it can offer advertisers a comparison point with other platforms and the ability to calculate their ROI (return on investment).
Here is a quick comparison of CPM averages for different platforms, just for interest (source):
- TikTok CPM: $0.20
- Facebook CPM: $0.44
- Pinterest CPM: $0.10 – $1.50
- Instagram CPM: $0.20 – $2.00
So when should you pay attention to impressions?
In three scenarios:
1. No Increase of Impressions
Impressions are the number of times your content is displayed for the user in their feed.
For that to happen, Pinterest needs to deem your content relevant to certain search queries, your profile needs to be relevant to the specific keyword, and match that with the user intent.
If you’re not seeing any movement or increase in your impressions after a period of three months, it is very likely that you missed out on some important aspects of Pinterest SEO.
If you’re in a seasonal niche, you might need to wait a little longer to see when the impressions pick up.
It’s a good idea to look at Pinterest Trends and put in your main niche keyword to see the seasonality curve.
2. No Impressions on New Pins
If you’re not getting any impressions on your brand new pins within one or two weeks – I’m talking double-digit impressions – it’s likely you might have triggered some Pinterest spam filter and the platform is not showing your content.
It’s completely normal for brand-new accounts to have 5 – 10 impressions during the first week, but after that, it would normally climb higher.
3. Sudden Drop in Impressions
If you see a big steep drop in your impressions, you might have triggered the Pinterest spam filter.
I have already addressed how to spot and fix the issue in this article.

Key Takeaways
There is no real ‘good number of impressions’ on Pinterest, since that depends on your niche, how old and optimized your account is, how many group boards you have, and whether you have a seasonal niche or not.
Pay attention to impressions when you see a sudden drop, you don’t see any steady curve or gradual increase, or you don’t see at least double-digit impressions on one or two-week-old fresh pins.
